This was a fun one to figure outThe Table Top. Add one coat of polyurethane doing the top surface and sides at the same time. My son recently got into playing the game 'Go', so I decided to make him a Go Board (Goban) for his birthday. The Go board, called the goban in Japanese, is the playing surface. I'm not sure which wood types/varnish are best to avoid this, but it's something to look into. Lightly sand the surface with 220 grit sandpaper. Go equipment refers to the board, stones (playing pieces), and bowls for the stones required. Despite that, I've still seen (40 year old) gobans that wobble when put on a flat surface. Go boards have the same issue, so the wood used for a Goban is usually dried for several years before it's used. If you have a wood cutting board in the kitchen, chances are it will be bent after washing it a couple of times in hot water. Personally I think owning a goban is more for aesthetic than function, because it's more practical to play online anyways.Īnother consideration when picking the wood is it's susceptibility to humidity/temperature changes. The koreans prefer this because it minimizes distraction.

Korean professional boards are made of dark Agathis wood, but they have the playing surface completely painted beige so the grain is not even visible anymore. Dark woods (or varnish) give a more luxurious impression, but are disfavored for this reason. Proceed to cut, following the circular trace from step 5. Some thoughts about wood types: Most boards are made using bright tinted wood, to make sure the black stones are as clearly visible as the white stones. Step 7: Making the Hole Cutout (4 of 4) With the board flat on the workbench: Using the Jigsaw, insert blade into small hole created in step 6. There are precise measurements, materials and techniques that the Japanese have decided is best.ĭepending on who you're making the board for, you may want to go for something more original, or try to craft it traditionally.

You'll find that once you go down this rabbit hole, there is a lot of emphasis on following tradition. There is a lot of useful information about making your own boards here:
